Northern Paddle and Trail hosts hiking, biking, paddling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and geocaching events. The organization is a great way to meet other silent sport enthusiasts.

March 3rd 2012 snow shoe outing on the Giant Pine Trail

March 3rd, Saturday, 1:00p.m. Snow shoe the Giant Pine Trail in the Nicolet National Forest east of Three Lakes.  The trail is easy terrain and will take about one and a half hours.  We will be among enormous white pine, hemlock and birch in a remote area of the Nicolet.  Leader: Larr Zibell 715-546-2131, lzibell@gmail.com .   Please contact Larr if attending.  Meet at 1:00 p.m. at the Three Lakes Winery parking lot. March 9 or 10 or 11th.   Check out Canoecopia with other NPT members.  This is the Midwest’s largest canoe and paddle expo held every year at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison off of John Nolan Drive.  Check out Rutabaga’s website for a schedule of daily events.  Contact Mike Shores at 715-420-0284 if you’re interested in going  or connecting while there with the NPT group.

******April 15  Sunday  1PM*******   Hike the trails at the Ced Vig Center.  Potluck afterwards and planning some more outings for spring and summer at the lodge.   Ced Vig Center is on South Shore Dr. 1.1mi east of Rhinelander.  Go east on Cty P at the intersection of the Hwy 17/ Cty P ( Shopko).  Turn left at first rd on left –Faust Lake Rd, then take an immediate right onto South Shore Dr.

May 8th  Tuesday  9:30 A.M.Paddle the Upper Wisconsin River from Hwy K to River Road. Bring binoculars for some birding on this 7.5 mile gentle paddle north of Eagle River. Be prepared for any kind of weather.  Lunch will be at a picturesque spot on the river. Contact Jean at 715-369-1433 for details if you’d like to participate.

May 10th Thursday  Thursday  9:30 A.M.Paddle the Upper Wisconsin River from River Road to County Road G. . This narrow 11 mile stretch of the Wisconsin River winds mostly through a marsh north of Eagle River.   Bring binoculars and camera if you wish to catch the wildlife.  A lunch will be at a campsite along the way. May 12th  Saturday   7 AM   Hike the Penokee Hills in Ashland County  Enjoy an easy 1 ½ mile hike to Morgan Falls and back, after which we will continue up to St. Peter’s Dome for a more difficult 3 ½ mile hike there and back.  Bring lunch, binoculars, cameras and field guides as we view the surrounding wilderness area.  Be prepared with water, raingear, good hiking shoes and layers of clothing for all kinds of weather.  Contact Jean at 715-369-1433 for details on carpooling and meeting time and place.

May 13th Sunday,  1 P.M.   Bike the Bearskin Trail  Meet at the trailhead on Hwy K.  We will be biking to Minocqua for an ice cream and then returning. OR if participants that day want to just bike to the outlook pier and back we’ll do that instead. Contact Mary Boyer at 362-6544 or 628-0300

May 20th Sunday, 2PM   Photo Hike on the Buck Lake Trail.  Join Chris Dries with your camera as we photograph nature hiking around Buck Lake.  Meet at the Buck Lake parking lot.  Contact Chris at 715-369-2936 if going.

May 31st Thursday 3:30PM – 7:30PM   Paddle the Pelican River after work from where the Lake George Creek goes under Hwy 8 to where Hwy 8 crosses the Pelican River.  This paddle is INTERMEDIATE difficulty and will start at 5:30 p.m.. Contact Carol or Guy Hansen at 715-282-5810.

June 6th  Wednesday 5:30PM  An afterwork paddle on the Rice Creek downstream to Oneida Lake. There you will portage a small dam into Hancock Lake and paddle to the landing.  Meet at Hwy K  put in at the culvert .  To get there at the Hwy 47 and 8 intersection, take Hwy K about 8 miles past the Oneida County Landfill.   Contact Jay Joppa at 715-362-3731 or 715-499-1022. Slightly above beginner difficulty level.

June 8-10 Fri- Sunday  Camp and paddle the Pine River and/or Border Brule Rivers.  We wiil be camping at the Lost Lake Campground in the Nicolet Nat’l Forest.  Take Hwy 70 to FR2450 to Lost Lake Campground.  On Sunday, we will paddle the Border Brule starting at 9:30 am, meet at the campground.  This is an easy paddle with 1 small drop that can be portaged.  Contact Jean Johnson 715-369-1433.

June 9th Saturday  Paddle the oxbow of the Pine River near Florence.  This is an easy hour or so paddle and a 1/4th mile walk back to the put in.  Contact Mike Shores at 715-437-0570 or 715-420-0284.

June 9th Saturday. 9:30AM   For a longer paddle on the Pine River meet at Lost Lake Nat’l Forest Campground.  This is a paddle of a totally undeveloped stretch of one of WI’s Wild Rivers.  Difficulty depends on whether you run or portage a Grade 2 rapids.  This will be at the discretion of the trip leader.  To get to the campground:  go east of Tipler in Florence Co. take FS 2450.  Follow signs to the campground. June 23rd Saturday 12:30PM  Paddle the Wisconsin River from Bev Engstom’s place at 6145 Hat Rapids Road to Rollie’s Rd take out. A Brat n’ beer cook out at Bev’s afterwards.  Intermediate difficulty.   To get to Bev’s,  take Hwy 17S to Hat Rapids Road to Fire Number 6145.  Look for sign.  Contact Bev at 715-369-2567

June 30th Saturday      Paddle the Peshtigo River south of Crivitz.  This is a nice flat stretch of the Peshtigo River from the Hwy 141 bridge to Cty P requiring  a slightly above beginner ability level.  Meet at the Hwy 141 bridge south of Crivitz.  Contact Mike Shores at 715-437-0570 or 715-420-0284.

July 7th Saturday.  Paddle the White River in Bayfield County.  Enjoy this full day paddle on a river with Class 1 and 2 rapids and rocks to dodge in a fast current. Contact Jean at 715-369-1433 for more details.

July 11th  Wednesday 6PM  Enjoy an afterwork easy paddle on Lake Creek.  We’ll meet at the boat landing on River Road.  To get there, take Stevens Street to Hwy W to River Rd.  No shuttle will be necessary as we will paddle around Lake Creek and Thunder Lake.  Contact Jay Joppa at 715-362-3731 or 715-499-1022.

July 15th Sunday 1PM or 2PM (tbd)   Photo hike on the Escanaba Ski Trail.  Enjoy hiking and taking pictures along this several mile trail. We’ll be sharing tips and ideas to improve our shots of nature. July 22  Sunday 1:30PM  Paddle the Wisconsin River near Mary Lou’s  1813 River St. and enjoy a bonfire afterwards!  Contact Mary Lou at 715-362-4168 for further details.

August 1st Wednesday  5:30PM  Picnic, Paddle and/or hike in the Full Moon   NPT will host a quarterly meeting at the Perch Lake Shelter starting early evening.  We will barbecue hot dogs etc. , plan more events and then paddle Perch Lake in the moonlight.  Or for those who are landlubbers, hike a trail around the shelter in the moonlight.  More details to come.

 August 1st Wednesday 5:00p.m.  Summer quarterly potluck and meeting for planning upcoming calendar events.  Perch Lake shelter.  You can paddle Perch Lake during the blue moon.

August 8  Wednesday 5:30PM  Enjoy an afterwork easy paddle on the Rhinelander Flowage (WI River). We will put in at the Apperson Boat Landing.   To get there, take Hwy 47 north from Rhinelander, and turn right onto Apperson Rd.  There will be no shuttle as we will paddle upstream and return downstream to the parking lot. August 18th Saturday   Paddle Rose and Sawyer Lakes. This requires a slightly above beginner ability level.    Details to come from Mike Shores at 715-437-0570 or 715-420-0284.

August 25th Saturday  Paddle the Willow Flowage,  Details to come from Dan and Marj Mehring.

September 7th  Friday 5PM  Enjoy NPT’s traditional afterwork paddle potluck on the Pelican River.  Meet at the Hwy 8 bridge.  To get there, at the Hwy 8 & 17 intersection head east on Hwy 8 abut 2 miles to the bridge.  We will paddle an hour down the Pelican River to Joppa’s backyard for a potluck.  Or come just for the potluck. September 8th Saturday    Paddle the Mondreaux Flowage west of Merrill, hike the nearby Ice Age Trail and  camp at the Spearhead Campground.  The paddling requires  a slightly above beginner ability level.  Contact Mike Shores at 715-437-0570 or 715-420-0284.

September 15th Saturday 1PM  Paddle the Moen Chain of Lakes, a distance of about 5 miles.  This includes a short remote paddle to Sunset Lake and the trip will end in a cookout at Hansen’s home.  We will put in at the Moen Lake landing.  To get there take Cty. C east, Left on Moen Lake Drive for about 2 miles to the boat landing on the right.  Contact Dave Hansen 715-362-8504.

October 6th Saturday 12:00 PM  Bike the Boulder Junction Bike Trail on this beautiful fall day.  Meet at the intersecton of Hwy M &N.  To get there from Rhinelander, take hwy 47 to Woodruff to Hwy 51 to Hwy M.  Intermediate level of difficulty.  Contact Jay Joppa at 715-362-3731 or 715-499-1022.

October 18th  Thursday  Bike the Roads of the Nicolet   Details to come from Mike Shores as time nears.

November 3rd Saturday  TBA   Enjoy our NPT annual Halloween Hike and Potluck at the Judy Swank Shelter on Perch Lake west of Rhinelander.  Contact Dan or Marj Mehring for details.
